The song ‘Chandan Sa Badan Chanchal Chitwan…’ laid roots to good lyrics
Main To Bhool Chali Babul Ka Des…., Zindagi Ka Safar…, Dil Aisa Kisi Ne Mera Toda…
These soul stirring songs are penned by Indian cinema’s great lyrist Indeevar, who is better remembered for his command over chaste Hindi lyrics in Bollywood songs and lyrics that were laced with quality poetry. February, 27, marks the death anniversary the legendary lyricist. Glamsham. Com pays him homage and shares an interesting anecdote about how music director Kalyanji Anandji encouraged him to pen lyrics that suited his heart.
Indeevar, whose real name was Shyamalal Babu Rai began poetry at a tender age, inspired by the Indian Freedom Struggle movement, led by Gandhiji. In 1942 when Gandhiji gave the ‘Quit India’ call, Indeevar wrote fiery patriotic poems and even went to jail. In the ’50s he began his journey in Bollywood, but film lyrics were not his cup of tea. Yet, in order to survive, he penned lyrics much against his wishes.
Hence for the first time when music directors Kalyanji Anandji approached him to pen lyrics for the Nutan starrer SARASWATICHANDRA, Indevaar wrote the first song Chandan Sa Badan Chanchal Chitwan… that became such a hit that it went on to win National award for music directors Kalyanji Anandji
However readers would be stunned to know that when Indeevar wrote this song the original words were Chehre pe namak, ankhon mein chamak… When Kalyanji Anandji expressed their reservation citing the words to be cheap, Indeevar retorted. ”I have written as per Bollywood norms because if I write in chaste shringar ras, then the producer may kick me out!”
Kalyanji Anandji were touched by his frank remark and requested him to pen the song as per his desire. They gave him complete liberty to write the song. In fact they set the song on tune only after the lyrics were written rebelling against the trend where the tune was first made and lyricist had to write according to the tune.
The result the song is considered as one of the best romantic songs with sensual arousal with poetic ethics. Later Indeevar wrote many songs for Kalyanji Anandji that had brilliant lyrics remember… Kasme Wade Pyar Wafa …., samjhauta ghamon se karlo …, Koi Jab Tumhara Hriday Tod De…
