She added, ”I remember eminent music director Master Ghulam Haider had called me to record a song with an upcoming singer at Filmistan Studios for the Dilip Kumar starrer SHAHEED. The song ‘Pinjre Mein Bulbul Bole Mera Chota Sa Dil Doley’ was about the affectionate relationship of a brother and a sister.”
She continued, ”After the song, Madan Mohan appreciated me and I too praised him. We instantly shared a bond. He told me that he was interested in music direction and took a pledge from me to sing in his debut movie AANKHEN, in which he was a music director. I nodded.”
However, readers would be surprised to know that the relation that began on such a sweet note turned sour. Due to some unavoidable circumstances Lata Mangeshkar could not fulfill her promise to Madan Mohan to sing a song in his debut movie which made Madan Mohan was disheartened.
After this incident, Madan Mohan decided to visit Lata Mangeshkar at her house to clarify things. Recalling this second meeting Lata Mangeshkar said in an interview, ”As I had not been able to sing in Madan Bhaiya’s first film he was very sad. One day he came to my house and said, ‘Our relation began with a brother and sister’s affectionate song.
Today is Raksha Bandhan. Tie a Rakhi on my wrist and promise that we shall always remain brother and sister and you shall always sing for me.’ Tears rolled down my cheeks as I tied Rakhi to him. Since then, I always called him Madan Bhaiya and we shared a similar revered relation.”
