Manoj Bajpai is in a tell-tale mood. Back from Cannes where he celebrated the screening of his two part film GANGS OF WASSEYPUR, he is still soaking in the appreciation that he and his film have fetched there. While he is particularly elated with the fact that his director Anurag Kashyap has gained some more international recognition at such a high platform, Manoj does reveal that there was a point in his career over a decade ago when he had thought of turning producer for Anurag’s debut film.

“Yes, that was the time when I was not just planning to act in Anurag’s PAANCH but also co-produce it. He had written three career changing films for me – SATYA, KAUN, SHOOL – and I knew that here was this guy who would be going a long way. He narrated PAANCH to me and I really loved it,” reveals Manoj who couldn’t quite go all the way though.

Apparently, there was a misunderstanding that developed between the two back then in the late 90s due to which they drifted apart for more than a year. Worse, Anurag was never in the know-how of Manoj’s inclination to produce the film. He went ahead and made the film with Kay Kay Menon and other actors. Unfortunately for all involved though, the film never saw the light of the day.
“Exactly, and I keep rubbing him on for this that if only the misunderstanding on his end would have been sorted out, we could have worked together on PAANCH. He has made some brilliant films like GULAAL, BLACK FRIDAY, DEV D, SHAITAN, UDAAN etc. in the interim period. Now he has to come up with something that covers up for my losses,” Manoj gets a tad emotional here.
Boasting of a massive cast comprising of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Piyush Mishra, Reema Sen, Richa Chadda, Huma Qureshi, Yashpal Sharma, Raj Kumar Yadav and Tigmanshu Dhulia, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR releases all over on 22nd June.
