The much awaited Sriram Raghavan directed, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Varun Dhawan starrer, BADLAPUR, impressed at the box-office with a 30-40 percent start, which ranks amongst the top openings of 2015. What must be kept in mind is that BADLAPUR does not have the usual commercial gimmicks nor can it be classified as a film which is in Varun Dhawan’s comfort zone, as it is stark, dark and hard hitting. The good thing is that very much like T-Series’s BABY, the critics as well as the audience have both unanimously praised the film.

The film also showed a significant pick up during the latter shows and should see one of the top opening day numbers of the year. Given the modest budget (all inclusive) of around 25 crore, BADLAPUR appears to be a probable winner.
The other release of the same week, Mahendra Dhariwal’s MONSOON, could not make a mark with the audience and has been rejected.
Meanwhile, last week’s Vikramjit Singh directed Arjun Rampal, Ranbir Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez starrer, ROY, could not quite capitalize on a fairly decent 28 crore opening weekend as the weekdays were not on the same level (barring the Mahashivratri holiday on Tuesday). Additionally the day with the biggest potential (Sunday) was hit hard by the Indo-Pak cricket match. Having said that ROY, ended the first week netting close to 40 crore (to be validated).
