The re-release of JAANE BHI DO YAARO has brought into debate the continuance of agencies like National Film Development Corporation, NFDC, to provide the platform for new and emerging directors to practice with their ideas and beliefs and give the dream their shape. As a matter of fact were it not for NFDC milestones of the Indian cinema like JAANE BHI DO YAARO, and latest one ANHEY GHORE DA DAAN would not have seen the light of the day and would not have acquired the cult status, rather they would have been dumped in some box.

As a matter of fact the parallel cinema in India would not have developed were NFDC not existing and one would not have had the opportunity to soak in the performance of the actors like Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi etc. It was NFDC that also gave platform to the directors like Kundan Shah, Govind Nihlani etc., who went on to acquire cult status thanks to handholding provided by NFDC.

In the context of the fact that Indie cinema is making huge waves all over the country, it is more so imperative that funding organizations like NFDC continue to play their role in facilitating the distribution of the films, and platform of Doordarshan ought to be opened for Indie films. It was Doordarshan which was catalyst in giving JAANE BHI DO YAARO the cult status, by repeatedly telecasting the film as and when it felt like casting.

Besides, it was the letter head of NFDC that had opened the windows for makers of JBDY to shoot in places where they would otherwise not have been allowed to do so, for example to shoot in half constructed buildings, in the Borivali National Park, at the Marine Lines Railway station etc.

For the new breed of directors who are making Indie films, if NFDC takes initiative to facilitate distribution of these films on Doordarshan, it would really go a long way in helping the cause of alternate cinema.

The manner in which the Indie films have been crowded out of the multiplexes, where the only entertainment is displayed does not leave them much scope to showcase their product. But if Doordarshan starts releasing the Indie films on its own directly, as it has been done in the past, it would be a positive step forward for the cause of Indie cinema.
