After directing Priyanka Chopra in MARY KOM biopic, Omung Kumar is now all set to work with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in his second project, which is yet again a biopic on Sarabjit. Aishwarya will play slain prisoner Sarajit Singh’s sister Dalbir Kaur in the biopic.
Omung confirms, “Yes I have signed Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. She has given her nod for the project,” and adds, “When I narrated the script, Aishwarya was in tears and immediately said yes. The story of Sarabjit is very touchy. It can move anyone.”
When asked what made him think of Aishwarya for Dalbir’s role, Omung said, “I think Aishwarya perfectly suited the role. She is a fantastic actor and can display emotions well. She is experienced and she has got the maturity to play. The journey of her character will be shown in different ages, from 20-58 years old.”
But probe Omung, if he ever thought of repeating Priyanka in his second film and he says, “I never chose Aishwarya over Priyanka. Aishwarya was my first choice for this film. While Priyanka was apt to essay the role of Mary Kom as she comes across as a physically rough and tough persona, Aishwarya was chosen for Sarabjit because she can well bring out the emotions.”
And it is a big challenge for Omung to present Aishwarya in altogether a different light. “Yes it’s a challenge for me. She has never played such role and this is the first time for her to play a completely new type of role. So it will be a surprise for everyone to see. I am happy Aishwarya is part of this film.”
Quiz him about Aishwarya’s look in the film and the filmmaker says, “It’s too early to talk about her look in the film. Right now I am in Malaysia, preparations will start once I come back. Right now only I have met Dalbir. Ash will meet Dalbir afterwards.”
The film will go on floors in the first week of October with a start-to-finish 60-day schedule. It will be shot in and around Punjab. The Sarabjit biopic will be send to Cannes next year and it will release by the end of May 2016.
The rights are with Zeishan Quadri, who is the co-producer of the film. And he also had an NOC from Sarabjit's sister and the family.
