Finally, the great CBFC circus run by the alleged sanskari Pahlaj Nihalani has ended. We reported earlier that Pahlaj Nihalani will be asked to leave, in a dramatic turn around Pahlaj Nihalani was sacked and this noted lyricist was asked to take charge as CBFC chief with immediate effect.
Though filmmaker like Chandraprakash Dwivedi was considered as the favorite at the time of the CBFC meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on July 28, the surprise uncertainty of politics and life resulted in the appointment of noted lyricist Prasoon Joshi as the new CBFC chief. The I &B ministry has issued a press release stating that appointment of Prasoon Joshi is for a period of three years or until further orders. Joshi has to take charge with immediate effects.
The news has spread cool breeze of relief amongst the filmmakers who considered Nihalani as a hurdle in freedom of expression. Embroiled in controversies since his appointment as the chief of the 23-member board in January, 2015, Nihalani was always in news for his alleged controversial remarks and unnecessary interference and comments.
Prasoon Joshi is a member of the Benegal Committee headed by prominent filmmaker Shyam Benegal, which will see the powers of the CBFC diluted to give filmmakers more leeway by granting more categories for films with adult content. Following Nihalani’s continues battle with filmmakers who accused him of intruding on their creative freedom, I&B ministry formed the Benegal Committee to suggest a revamp of the certification board.
Seeing a new dawn that sprays a new fragrance of hope, The Film Industry has welcomed Joshi’s appointment with open arms. Calling it a good choice, Shyam Benegal has been reportedly quoted saying, “I’m not going to comment on any individual in this case, but if the government has made the choice of Prasoon Joshi, it is a very good choice. His understanding of mass media is excellent – be it cinema, television, or print media. So it’s a good choice”.
Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar welcomed the decision and was quoted by IANS saying, “Prasoon is a much evolved person. He comes from the advertising background and will have a modern point of view. Choosing Prasoon is a welcome decision by the government. I would like to thank Smriti Iraniji and Rajyavardhan Singh Rathoreji for their decision. I am sure Prasoon will have a different outlook. He understands today's movies well.'
Prasoon Joshi is a known for his achievement as the award winning lyricist for movies like BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG. National Film Award for Best Lyrics twice, for his work in TAARE ZAMEEN PAR and CHITTAGONG. Prasoon Joshi has awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2015, for his contributions towards the field of Arts, Literature and Advertising.
