Buoyed by the success of BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has now all the more resolve to bring his debut directorial affair AKS (2001) back for the audience. He is currently working on a ‘redux’ version of the Amitabh Bachchan-Manoj Bajpayee starrer.
“On its release over a decade ago, it was one of the most awaited movies of those times. It had opened well too but then owing to a complicated screenplay, edit pattern as well as an unheard of subject, the supernatural thriller couldn’t sustain its run. Over the years though, it has been termed as ‘way ahead of its times’ and has managed a decent enough fan following. Now Mehra feels that the film can be revived for the current generation of audience that is far more receptive to newer subjects and treatment,” informs a source.
Given the fact that Mehra had also worked on his own version of DELHI 6 by working around the climax, looking back at AKS won’t be a first for him.

“In fact he does that for every film of his, whether it has been successful or not,’ a close associate adds, “Even for RANG DE BASANTI, he has carried out this exercise with his team. However AKS is all the more close to his heart since it was not just his first ever film but also the one which saw appreciation coming it’s way pretty late in the day.”
Now with BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG too turning out to be successful despite a screenplay that goes in three different time-zones and isn’t considered as a linear outing, Mehra is confident of working on AKS and bringing it back.
“Well, back then say said that the film was 10 years ahead. Ab 12 saal nikal chuke hain matlab time aa gaya hai,’ he smiles, “Many have come and told me that I should remake it or re-release it. Well, let’s see what I do with it. However one thing is for sure that I am working on a ‘redux’ version of it. The first step would be to release a special DVD and Blu Ray. That’s a good way to ensure perpetuity for your film.”
