The year 2012 is turning out to be a landmark year for producer Sajid Nadiadwala. Not only does he celebrate 25 years of being in the business of films, but his last release HOUSEFULL 2 earned worldwide collections of Rs 200 crores. Now, he’s capping the year by turning director.
At his best buddy Salman Khan’s insistence, Sajid has decided to take over the directorial responsibilities of his next production KICK, starring the superstar actor. On why he has pushed the producer in this new direction, Salman Khan says, ”Sajid’s narrations are better than those of most directors, and I’ve been pushing him to make the switch for years. In fact, I wanted him to turn director 10 years ago when he came to me with a film called KUNWARA. Today, I’m still kunwara but he’s finally turned director!”
Sajid, for his part, says this was a decision he took only after the superstar insisted he couldn’t see the project being helmed by anyone else. Says the newly minted director, ”Our friendship goes back two decades. Salman and I share a very special chemistry, which you will now get to see on the big screen. We’ve given big hits like JEET, JUDWA, HAR DIL JO PYAR KAREGA and MUJSHE SHAADI KAROGI in the past. So at this stage of his career, if he’s selected me as his director, I have to make sure I deliver to his expectations. I’ve also been speaking to several people from the industry that I’ve worked with in the past and they’ve all given me their blessings.”
As for the reason why Shirish Kunder is not helming the project anymore, Sajid says it was a decision that was taken mutually and amicably, as KICK was his baby from the start. ”Shirish sent me a lovely message that read, ‘It was you who envisioned this film, and no one else could have done justice to it’.”
KICK will be produced by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment Pvt Ltd (NGE).
