Though Madhuri Dixit made her debut in 1984 with Rajshri Productions’s ABODH yet it was her dance number ‘Ek Do Teen’ in TEZAAB (1988) that made her a star overnight. In fact, dance has been the strongest asset of Madhuri Dixit’s career. However, readers would be surprised to know that dance was prohibited in her family. In an interview Madhuri said, ”My mother Snehlata aspired to be a dancer but during her time dance was considered taboo. Girls from decent family were prohibited to learn dance hence my mother curbed her ambition but pledged that if she had a daughter she would teach her dancing.”

Thus, when Madhuri was 8 years old her mother taught her classical dance under country’s most eminent classical dance master Pandit Birju Maharaj, a doyen of Kathak style. Later under Bollywood’s most versatile choreographer Saroj Khan, Madhuri Dixit polished the nuances of dancing skill. Saroj Khan, praising Madhuri Dixt once said in an interview, ”Madhuri is a delight for any choreographer. She is never tired and until she perfects her dancing steps she continues to practice.”

So which is the toughest dance that made Saroj Khan to work really hard to extract from Madhuri Dixit? ”The most difficult song that we did together was ‘Dola Re’ number in DEVDAS because the dance was purely classical called ‘Nautwary’. It was a blend of Kathak and Bharatnatyam. Further, it had both Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai performing hence it required a perfect sync between the two. The song took several retakes. It used to exhaust both Madhuri and Ash so much that they would fall down but would continue again. However, I must say the dedication paid off as the end result was fantastic,” she further added.
