This is the latest trend in Marathi cinema, throwing success parties. Shreyas & Deepti Talpade’s POSHTER BOYZ has had a good run at the box office and the actor-turned-producer threw a success party at a watering hole in Mumbai’s suburban district. POSHTER BOYZ has collected about 3.5 crores so far. This may look like an insignificant and extremely modest figure in comparison with the reported box office collections of Bollywood blockbusters, yet its great news for Marathi cinema.
The Bollywood blockbuster may be a bad business proposition in spite of its 100-crore-plus collection, while POSHTER BOYZ will return a cool profit of a few crores for its producers and distributors in the final calculation. Its theatrical business combined with the earnings from the sale of the satellite and other ancillary rights, topping it off with the cherry of the Maharashtra Govt.’s subsidy of Rs.40 lakhs, will nearly bring in more than 50-100% returns on the producer’s investment. And one is not even talking of the best-case scenario here. If that’s not enough, the producer may even rake in more moolah by selling the remaking rights of his film for a substantial amount.
That’s what Talpade’s film production banner Affluence Movies Pvt. Ltd. is planning now, to remake POSHTER BOYZ in Hindi. They should not find it difficult to put together the proposal after having established their credentials.
Incidentally, Bollywood’s 100 crore plus success stories cannot be written without its box office business in Mumbai/Maharashtra territory, which accounts for nearly 40 % of its domestic box office collections. Even if we exclude the collections from Gujarat theatres, and include CP and CI business that have a substantial Maharashtrian presence, producers and distributors will find it quite reassuring to remake a successful Marathi film into Hindi.
POSHTER BOYZ, a comedy, was released in nearly 170 screens. It’s directed by Sameer Patil and the cast includes Dilip Prabhavalkar, Hrishikesh Joshi, Aniket Vishwasrao, Pooja Sawant and Neha Joshi. Quite a few well-known names of Bollywood have made special appearances in the film. They include Shreyas Talpade, Rohit Shetty, Farah Khan, Anu Malik, Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar, Murli Sharma and Ashwini Kalsekar.
