The clash between the new releases of the Friday gone by saw an interesting outcome as Balaji’s HALF GIRLFRIEND, which was expected to dominate T-Series’ HINDI MEDIUM, could not do so and in fact the balance has now tilted in favour of the Irrfan Khan starrer!
Coming to the details, after a good opening weekend (31-32 crore), the Arjun-Shraddha starrer saw a big fall in collections, Monday onwards.
On the other hand, HINDI MEDIUM, which opened on an ordinary note saw a day wise increase in collections ending the opening weekend netting over 12 crore. What is amazing is that it’s Monday collections (3 crore plus) were more than that of Friday (just short of 3 crore).
In the overseas, the Mohit Suri directed HALF GIRLFRIEND grossed $1.4m as opposed to the $.70m by HINDI MEDIUM, during the opening weekend, but the latter is catching up fast (almost the same in US!).
As things stand, while the moderate budgeted HINDI MEDIUM is sure to end up as a success (if not hit!), the much more expensive HALF GIRLFRIEND will have to rely on non-theatrical rights for even an average status, though the distributors NH Studioz (released through August Entertainment) may even end up entailing some losses!
