HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA has turned out to be an instant hit at the box office, with over 30 crore coming in at the box office on its first weekend itself. The film’s success is also a testimony of Varun Dhawan’s rise as a star who, along with another star-in-the-making, Alia Bhatt, has managed to find audience all over again after MAIN TERA HERO and STUDENT OF THE YEAR. While former was as ‘desi’ affair as it gets, latter was set in the fashion world of Karan Johar.

Now in HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA, he has unleashed the Punjabi in him with a stage and setting that allowed him ample scope to do so.
‘Exactly,’ says Varun pronto, ‘I was very comfortable with the whole Punjabi milieu since a lot of my cousins live there. Earlier I used to see it all as just a representation but now I have tried to recreate that. Thoda bahot universal character ki tarah bhi play kiya hai. Agar exact terms mein bolun toh it was fun to be playing this typical Dilli ka aashiq type ladka!’
However, time and again Punjabis are shown to be these overtly loud people that becomes caricature-ish. What kind of effort did he put in to avoid that?
‘This is something that I was definitely sure of from the very beginning. Shashank (Khaitan) as well as I believed that agar koi ladka Punjabi hai toh zaroori nahi ki oonchi awaaz mein hi bolega. Since Humpty is a very sensitive character with a lot of comic aspects to him as well, we decided to keep it all normal. Thoda bahot accent zaroor hai par aisa nahi ki fake lage,’ he details.
Thankfully, the effort shows in the final product and the audience verdict does its job as a nod of approval too!
