It was a week where a Hollywood venture, Vin Diesel’s FAST & FURIOUS 8 managed to dominate the prestigious India release, Vidya Balan’s BEGUM JAAN.
While FAST & FURIOUS 8 (which released on Thursday) managed 9-10 crore, in addition to the Wednesday paid previews, Mukesh Bhatt’s BEGUM JAAN opened to a 20 percent response on the first day (Friday). Having said that, all is not lost for the Vidya Balan starrer and if it can pull up it’s socks during the coming days, it can still manage to put up a fair show.
Concluding with the Taapsee Pannu starrer, NAAM SHABANA, after a 26 crore opening week, the film held reasonably well adding another 8 crore, thus netting a creditable 34 crore (to be validated) in two weeks from India, thanks to a super cameo from National Award winner Akshay Kumar.
However, given the 35-40 crore (all inclusive) price and non-performance in the overseas, the film will be lucky to get to a coverage status, even after accounting for non-theatrical rights, which are reportedly in the 9-10 crore (Zee TV & T-Series) range.
