Danny Denzongpa, the menacing villain of the ’70s deserves kudos for making his presence felt in an industry that is known to be ruthless towards unconventional looking actors. But despite odd looks and vicious remarks of racism, Danny stood tall and proved his critics wrong by his hard work and commendable talent. February 25 marks the actors 66th birthday. Glamsham.Com wishes him warm birthday greetings.

Danny Denzongpa shares a warm relation with the Bachchan family, particularly with Jaya Bachchan, as she was his classmate at FTII in Pune. The two share a great rapport even today. However, few are aware that when Amitabh Bachchan was at peak of his career during the late ’70s and early ’80s, Danny silently envied his stardom. Believe it or not, he even distanced himself from sharing screen presence with the superstar and declined several movies. In fact Manmohan Desai offered him as many as four films including COOLIEand MARD, but Danny declined.
For a long period of 18 years, he avoided working with Amitabh Bachchan and finally gave his nod to Mukul Anand in AGNEEPATH, only after he was confident he had an imposing role against Amitabh Bachchan.
In a candid interview Danny confessed, ”It’s true I envied Amitji. But it was not his stardom, but his towering screen presence that made his co-actors look like pygmy. Hence I shunned many movies as I didn’t want to make a mockery of myself. But when Mukul Anand narrated the role of Kancha Cheena in AGNEEPATH, I grabbed the opportunity as it was a befitting role to face the marvellous actor. The role even fetched me a Filmfare nomination as ‘Best Supporting Actor’.”
He continues, ”Later Mukul Anand gave me another challenging role of Khuda Baksh in KHUDA GAWAH opposite Amitabh Bachchan. This role was again a meaty role that gave me satisfaction and won me the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ Filmfare award!”
