Besides the story and performances, upcoming release MASAAN is also being talked about for its real locations and showcasing the heart of India. MASAAN is set in the backdrop of Benaras city and it has been beautifully captured. And the credit for it goes to director Neeraj Ghaywan and National award winning cinematographer Avinash Arun.
Director Neeraj says, “This film had to be set in Benaras because it’s starting from the point of death healing people. It’s like how they come-of-age while dealing with death of someone really close. Benaras is a modern small town India, where a lot of the youth and people are struggling to find their way out from the shackles of socio-cultural or societal or financial crisis or individual crises…We became like the people of Benaras while shooting. And we just trusted anyone and everyone whom we met on our way for it.”
While Avinash Arun, the DOP of the film, who has worked on KAI PO CHE! (winner of Berlinale Panorama section 2012), DEOOL (National Award winner 2011), directed Marathi film KILLA (awarded by the Children's Jury in Generation Kplus section at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival), said, “MASAAN is the story of Benaras, it’s people and culture. Despite being a small town, Benaras is world over famous for retaining the oldest culture and tradition of India. To bring out the essence of Benaras, we personally experienced the energy of the place.”
Richa Chadha, the lead actor of MASAAN, said, “It always helps to be in the real locations. You experience the real dialect, food and flavours, smells. Every place has its own texture and personality. Benaras too offers its own uniqueness.”
