Few would know Emraan Hashmi’s grandmother Purnima Verma was an actress, who acted in several movies in the 40’s and 50’s. Her notable movies are Dilip Kumar’s JOGAN (1950), Dev Anand’s JAAL (1952) etc. She was a popular side heroine. Hence she secretly yearned for Emraan to take to acting. In fact at the tender age of around eight years Emraan even did many commercial advertisements, prominent being the Rasna advertisement. Hence after college when Emraan was in dilemma over selecting his career his uncle Mahesh Bhatt, famous filmmaker, recommended him to join films. Emraan nodded as he was confident to make it big in films as he thought he had inherited his grandmother’s genes, but his overconfidence got a jolt on the first day of the shot!

Recalling his first day’s shooting, Emraan in an interview reminisced, ”My first shot for my debut film FOOTPATH was shot at Mukesh Mill, in Mumbai. I played a typical Bhai type character and my first shot required me to confront the hero Aftab Shivdasani and deliver a power packed dialogue. I still remember the dialogue was… ”Batti band kar. Agar battery down ho jaayegi toh koi dhakka maarnewala aayega nahi!” However that single dialogue became an annoyance for me.”
He continues, ”All my family members, including my grandmother and Mahesh uncle were present for the shot but I was unable to deliver this simple dialogue. Each time I attempted the dialogue, I used to fumble. Finally after forty five retakes, Vikram Bhatt, the director called off the shooting for the day! I felt so embarrassed. A senior light man noticed my depression and boosting my confidence said, ”Aare sahab, kyon tension lete ho… sab ke saath aisa hota… Koi tension mat lo… Kal dekho sab theek ho jaayega!” His soothing words were like magic and next day I gave the shot in a single take!”
