Today is ‘Valentine’s Day’ and what better way than to remember Bollywood’s most fascinating real life love story between thespian Dilip Kumar and the gorgeous Madhubala. While the world knows that it was Madhubala’s father, who was against the union of the two, few know that to create differences between the two, he brainwashed Madhubala’s mind against Dilip Kumar. She developed resentment for Dilip Kumar so much so that she secretly desired that he should not attend her last rites to deathbed.

Eminent lyricist Shakeel Badayuni, who was quite close to Madhubala during the making of MUGHAL-E-AZAM, disclosed this strange reality during an interview. He said, “During the making of MUGHAL-E-AZAM, Madhubala never spoke to anybody but she only divulged her emotions with me.”
He continued, “One day she looked extremely depressed when she confided this peculiar wish to me. Filled with tears in her eyes, she told me in a choked voice that when she dies, Dilip Kumar must not attend her last journey to burial ground. Though I was taken aback, I could understand her utter melancholy. Her death wish kept hunting me and I poured her sentiments in the poetic verse of a song in MUGHAL-E-AZAM.”
Remember the climax song ‘Khuda Nigahban Ho Tumhara… If you attentively listen to the song notice the verse Kasam Hain Tumhe Na Dena Kandha, Uthe Jab Mera Janaaza…” (Promise me that when I die, you will not give shoulder to my coffin.),” he concludes.
Readers would be rather surprised to know that incidentally the lyrics turned true because when the news of Madhubala’s sudden death was announced, Dilip Kumar was shooting in Madras (now Chennai) for the movie GOPI. No sooner he heard the tragic news; he abandoned his shooting and rushed to Mumbai. But as fate would have been (or was it Madhubala’s intense desire) that before Dilip Kumar could reach the burial ground, the last rites were performed.
Thus, Dilip Kumar really could not pay the last homage to Madhubala!
