Poonam Dhillon made headlines after winning the prestigious Femina Miss India contest in 1977. At the same time eminent film legend Yash Chopra was finalizing the casting of his movie TRISHUL and was hunting for a fresh face. While browsing through multiple magazines he freezed upon watching a face that was strikingly stunning and was beauty personified! It was the picture of Poonam Dhillon. Chopra immediately swung into action to meet her.
Recalling her meeting with Yash Chopra, Poonam Dhillon in an interview said, ”Distinguished Punjabi language dramatist, theatre director, novelist, and short story writer Balwant Gargi was our family friend. One day he approached our family and told us that filmmaker Yash Chopra had seen my pictures and was overwhelmed.” She adds, ”To entice us he said the movie has big stars including Amitabh Bachchan but I was not much interested in films and was not much familiar about the super stardom of Amitji. Hence I declined the offer giving excuse that I was studying and the movie will hamper my studies.”

She continues, ”A dejected Balwant Gargi went back but few days later Yash Chopra met my mother and convinced her that the movie is being shot in Delhi and he will shoot my scenes during winter holidays without hampering my studies. Thus, my mother persuaded me and later even my friends pushed me to sign the movie.”
So, Poonam Dillion with a heavy heart gave a nod and rest as they say is history.
