In India Cricket is not just a game it’s a religion – we are sure you must have read this line umpteen number of times in your life. But have you ever wondered how exactly this game became “The religion” of India despite Hockey being our National game?

For an uninitiated person like me who were born in the 90s, the above questions remained unanswered as we never knew how exactly India gained its foothold in this gentleman’s game.

Well it was 1983 Cricket World Cup that changed the history of Cricket not just in India but the entire world. Kabir Khan with his next film ’83 is about to show how exactly a team of underdogs went on to lift the 1983 World Cup and never looked back.

While Ranveer Singh has been roped in to play the legendary captain and all-rounder Kapil Dev, the casting of the rest of the team is under progress.

At the announcement of this film the entire victorious team of 1983 Kapil dev, Mohinder Amarnath, Kirti Azad, Srikkanth, Roger Binny, Balwinder Singh, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengaskar and their manager PR Man Singh were present.

The entire team shared some really amazing and hilarious never-heard-before anecdotes from those days and it was really an event to die for as all those legendary players came together for the announcement of this film.

Reminiscing those days Kapil Dev shared an incident where he was to be elected as the captain but some people said that how he can be made a captain since he can’t speak in English and Kapil replied to them by saying, “I told them to bring someone from Oxford woh angrezi bolega aur main cricket khel lunga.”

Kapil Dev even thanked Ranveer Singh for being a part of this film which will tell the world the story of his winning team. And an excited yet nervous Ranveer replied, “Sir I don’t know how I am going to play a man like you on screen. It’s my honour and a privilege to be a part of this film which is one of the greatest stories of our country. Thank you so much for letting us tell your story.”

Kabir Khan was equally excited at the announcement as he said “once in a lifetime a filmmaker gets a one story that every pore in his body screams out to make that film and I can say that without any doubt in my mind this is that story of my life. This is a story that never should be forgotten. When I watched that match as a ten year old boy I didn’t even realize the implication of winning that match. Cricket changed forever from that day. In 1983 these guys (the cricketers) received 16 pounds a day as a daily allowance and because of them cricket changed forever and today 16,000 crores are being paid for TV rights.”
