Once for the movie CHIRAG (1969), staring Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh, film director Raj Khosla asked Majrooh Sahab to pen a song which could emphasize the beauty of eye because the film’s plot centered on the heroine’s attractive eyes and how her world goes upside down when she turns blind.

Majrooh Sultanpuri in an interview candidly confessed, “I wrote many mukhdas (Introductory lines) but Khosla Sahab (Raj Khosla) was not satisfied hence he told me to take time and come up with something striking.”

He added, “One day after lot of pondering when I could not think something exciting, I played my record player and began listening ghazals. Incidentally, the ghazal on the player was the popular ghazal ’Mujh Se Pahalii Sii Mohabbat Mere Mahaboob Na Maang…’ sung by Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan.”

“This ghazal had a striking line ‘Terii Aankhon Ke Sivaa Duniyaa Mein Rakhaa Kyaa Hai’, I was bowled over by this line and immediately called Faiz Ahmed Faiz, famous Pakistani Poet who wrote this ghazal and asked his permission to pen a song around this line. He gave his nod,” informed Majrooh.

Thus Majrooh Sultanpuri penned the song ‘Teri Aankhon Ke Siwa Duniya Mein Rakha Kya Hai, Ye Uthe Subah Chale Ye Jhuke Shaam Dhale ….’ sung by Mohd Rafi and the female version by Lata Mangeshkar.

The song became super hit and Majrooh remained obliged to Faiz all his life.

However, the cherry on cake was when Faiz Ahmed Faiz heard the song and called Majrooh Sultanpuri complimenting him for penning a brilliant song!
