Wanna guess which is veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah’s most cherished performance that the actor adores?
Well, apart from his debut film NISHANT (1975) Naseeruddin Shah believes that his other best performance till date has been his act in Gulzar’s TV serial ‘Mirza Ghalib’.
Going down the memory lane Naseer in an interview revealed how he was desperate to portray the historic character of legendary poet Mirza Ghalib on screen and was even quite angry with filmmaker Gulzar. Why read on….
“Since my college days at Aligarh Muslim University I dreamt of playing the renowned poet Mirza Ghalib and to get into the skin of the character I had done a lot of research on Ghalib and also worked meticulously to improve my Urdu language,” informs Naseer.
He added, “However, as I was preparing for the role, my dreams were shattered as I read an advertisement in newspaper announcing filmmaker Gulzar making a movie on Mirza Ghalib with Sanjeev Kumar in the lead. I was quite annoyed.”
In anger Naseer says that he even dashed off a letter to Gulzar protesting that he cannot make the movie with any actor except him.
Obviously, Gulzar laughed it off and began shooting with Sanjeev Kumar but call it destiny after few days of shooting the movie was shelved.
Years later when Gulzar decided to rework on Mirza Ghalib as a TV serial he had none other but Nasseruddin Shah in his mind to portray Ghalib but by now Naseer was a big star and his market price was too high for hiring him for TV serial.
Nevertheless, Gulzar decided to make an attempt and to his pleasant surprise Nasser grabbed the opportunity with both the hands. He also reminded Gulzar his despair how he had written him a letter in frustration when he had announced the film with Sanjeev Kumar.
In his passion to play the role Naseer even compromised on his market rate despite being the most sought after actor in the mid 80s.
