The holiday month of June promised much but failed to deliver, as far as box-office was concerned. The blockbuster success of ROWDY RATHORE in just the first week, in fact on the 1st of June, brought cheers to the whole of the industry and was also seen as a lucky beginning, but what followed was rather disappointing, to say the least.
Just a week later came the biggest disappointment of all, SHANGHAI, starring the likes of Emraan Hashmi and Abhay Deol and directed by Dibakar Banerjee, the film failed to appeal in big way, despite receiving huge critical acclaim and is likely to end at best as an above average status.
This was followed a week later by Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Sharman-Boman starrer, FERRARI KI SAWAARI. Although the film did do decent business in the first week (with no big stars associated with FKS), yet the film crashed in the second week. And to add to the woe, it has been sold at a very steep price, which will find recovery difficult.
This Friday's two new releases too disappointed big time. Kunal Kohli's three time span love story starring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra TERI MERI KAHAANI and Anurag Kashyap's festival favourite GANGS OF WASSEYPUR started on a dull notes, and considering that there is not much pick up, and not so good word-of-mouth, it looks increasingly difficult for either TMK or GOW to make a mark at the ticket window
The next week will see bunched releases, mostly small low budgeted films like DAAL MEIN KUCH KAALA HAI, 3 BACHELORS and MAXIMUM. And so not much is expected from any of the three films mentioned above. Amongst them only Kabeer Kaushik's MAXIMUM can hope to achieve something significant.
So all eyes are now on the monsoon month of July, which once again promises blockbusters and super hits. First and foremost is Rohit Shetty's Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan and Asin starrer, BOL BACHCHAN, which releases on 6th July. The amazing track record of Rohit-Ajay, and the hilarious promos do promise a big opening and a sure shot hit.
Just a week later, that is 13th July sees the release of COCKTAIL. Starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, the film is definitely getting more and more exciting with each passing day, and one can safely predict a very successful outcome for COCKTAIL.
The month will surely end on a cool note with Ekta Kapoor's KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM. The film has already generated much hype for its cheeky yet hilarious dialogues, good music and more over superb, sustained and innovative promotion, and so the film definitely appears to be a winner.
Here's wishing that it rains hits and super hits for the industry in the monsoon month of July!
