It has generally been witnessed that film business, during the first quarter of the year, is not up to the mark usually or as per expectations, due to various reasons like the chilling winter (Jan-Feb), the exams and competition seasons (March- first half of April) and dearth of major long holidays etc.
However, the first quarter of the year has been pretty good as far as 2017 is concerned.
The year started on a good note with DANGAL scoring strongly (10th day onwards) with great collections which continued for quite a while. OK JAANU too did decent business. The RAEES and KAABIL clash did cut business but both the films ended up with a good joint haul between them. While RAEES netted 135 crore and KAABIL too managed 98 crore.
The ever dependable ‘Khiladi’, Akshay Kumar, struck the first gold (hit) with Subhash Kapoor’s JOLLY LLB 2. The dubbed venture, THE GHAZI ATTACK, too was patronized by the audience to an extent.
Action lovers also gave their thumbs up to Vidyut-Adah’s COMMANDO 2.
The superstars of tomorrow, the youth heart throbs, Varun-Alia brought in lots of cheer (and moolah!) with the first super hit of the year, BADRINATH KI DULHANIA which is still rolling at the turnstile.
Anushka’s PHILLAURI too was appreciated by the target audience and the film proved to be a safe bet for its producers based on a good first week business .
Last but not the least; Taapsee Pannu’s NAAM SHABANA managed a fair week netting in excess of 26 crore from India.
For the stat conscious, as per the trade, thanks to films like DANGAL(carry over), RAEES, BADRINATH KI DULHANIA, JOLLY LLB 2, KAABIL, PHILLAURI, COMMANDO 2, THE GHAZI ATTACK (dubbed) and NAAM SHABANA, the films have netted around 750 crore, altogether, a great achievement indeed.
In a nutshell it has been a good first quarter for Bollywood business after a while and with big films lined up for the next quarter, things are looking even better, with BAAHUBALI 2 (dubbed) as well as Salman’s TUBELIGHT.
