Now this could well be a first. Akshay Kumar's production BHAJI IN PROBLEM, which released just last month, has managed to find a new market for itself. As per insiders, prominent filmmakers from down South are procuring rights for the film and at least a couple of remakes may be going on floors pretty soon.
"The film would now be remade in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada," informs our well-placed source, "The talks are in a very advanced stage and it is a matter of signing on the dotted line. If all goes well, at least a couple of versions would start early next year and release before 2014 comes to a close."
Now this is a welcome shift from the ongoing trend where movies from South have been remade in dozens with a record count hitting the screens this year. In fact Akshay's own BOSS as well as ROWDY RATHORE were remakes of a Malayalam and Telugu film respectively. Now it is poetic justice no less than a film of his has been picked up by South.
A good success up North, especially in Punjab, BHAJI IN PROBLEM is a comedy that stars Gippy Grewal in the lead who has already given a flurry of successes like CARRY ON JATTA, LUCKY DI UNLUCKY STORY, JIHNE MERA DIL LUTEYA, MEL KARADE RABBA, SINGH VS KAUR and MIRZA. The film also stars Akshay Kumar in an extended appearance.
While it is given that a young hot-n-happening star would feature as the leading man in the South versions, it would be interesting to see who steps into Akshay's part. His is a funny part in there and a superstar's presence would only enhance the film's prospects further, just as was the case with BHAJI IN PROBLEM.
