SARBJIT releases tomorrow and one song from the movie - ‘Salmat’ has struck the right chords.

When contacted Amaal Mallik, the music composer revealed some really interesting details about the song.

Mahesh Bhatt was a major reason the song came together for SARBJIT

“I made that as a rough track and played it to Mahesh Bhatt that time. Last year he met Bhushan Kumar in the office and told this boy (I) had a song I played to him 6 years back. He sang and showed the song to Bhushan Kumar literally (with the tunes). Bhushan sir heard it and told me it was a very nice song and that I should work on it. That's when we started writing lyrics,” Amaal revealed.

Salamat would’ve initially been part of AIRLIFT

Amaal said, “SARBJIT happened much later. The song was supposed to be part of AIRLIFT first but because the film's length was increasing, it had to go in SARBJIT. It was almost in AIRLIFT but we didn't do it because we anyways had ‘Soch Na Sake’ which would be a competitor to the same genre song.”

The strong co-incidence of Salamat

“Luckily Omung Kumar felt it went bang on to his situation. But then there could be some changes in the song. In SARBJIT, there's a moment where Randeep's character says main salamat hoon. He was actually shocked that the hook line of our song was ‘Salamat’. So it is an unbelievable co-incidence,” spoke Amaal.

He composed the song at the age of 17, but with different lyrics

Said Amaal, “When I made it, the lyrics were ‘Jab se tu mila something something’.”

The music changed a little too!

The music composer revealed, “Nothing in terms of tunes changed. It was only the arrangement that made it look a little Indian and there were flutes and dholaks used. Otherwise the song is as it is, since the last 6 years.”

Amaal tried happy lyrics for the song too!

Ask Amaal if it was composed to give the feeling of incompleteness and he says, “The melody itself has a little pain and longing na? So we tried happy lyrics and much more in between. Before we didn't have SARBJIT in hand, me and Virag (the lyricist) tried a lot to add different lyrics and make it more romantic or whatever was working, but somewhere it was cheating the tune. We felt the tune didn't demand what we were trying. The tune demanded a little bit of unfulfilled, unrequited love. In the film it works as someone across the border waiting for his loved one and normally even a boy can tell a girl that even if you aren't there, my love for you will remain the same.”

As said, what is meant to be, is meant to be. So the song Amaal composed is ‘Salamat’ in SARBJIT.
