Belarus girl wins Zee 'Musafir Item Bomb' contest

ShravanSometime ago there was a news that music director Shravan (of Nadeem-Shravan fame) is producing his debut Hindi film titled EK LADKI BHOLI BHALI SI- ADD SPICE TO YOUR LIFE. The film is a social comedy and will be directed by the accomplished Basu Chatterjee, who is wielding the megaphone after a long hiatus. The film will star the Zee talent hunt winners Aditi Sharma and Sarwar Ahuja in the lead roles and seasoned actors like Moushmi Chatterjee, Archana Puran Singh, Anupam Kher and Satish Kaushik in the supporting cast.

This fact scoops up an interesting trivia in my mind that about how the musicians in Bollywood have had a tryst with filmmaking, besides their regular job as lyricists, singers or music composers. Some of these guys tasted success while the others were not that lucky. Just take a look and it might strike you!

Vishal BharaddwajLook at Vishal Bharaddwaj! Vishal was a reputed music director before he turned to film direction. His scores for movies like SATYA, MAACHIS and HU TU TU were absolutely first-rate and immensely popular. He made his debut as a director with MAKDEE and then earned a lot of accolades for MAQBOOL that was reconstructed version of William Shakespeare's acclaimed play MACBETH. Vishal is now doing OMKARA that's also got shades of another Shakespeare classic OTHELLO.

View Gulzar's New Album Release Picture GalleryGulzar is another respected name to reckon with! While Gulzar Saab (as he is fondly known) is a highly respected poet / lyricist he is also a dignified filmmaker. His credits include such distinguished films as MERE APNE, AANDHI, ANGUR, KINARA and MAACHIS. Gulzar also dabbled with television with the television series MIRZA GHALIB that starred Naseruddin Shah in the title role of the legendary Urdu pet.

Lata MangeshkarMelody Queen Lata Mangeshkar too had a stint in film production with the film LEKIN that was directed by Gulzar. The film starred Vinod Khanna and Dimple Kapadia. The film won Gulzar the Filmfare award for Best lyricist. The National Award (Silver Lotus Award) was bestowed on Lata Mageshkar, Gulzar and Hridaynath Mageshkar for Best Female Playback Singer, Best Lyricist and Best Music Director respectively. The film received an encouraging critical acclaim at the box-office.

Now let's take a walk down the 'melody' lane! I don't know how many of you know this but the renowned playback singer late Mukesh had actually acted in quite a few movies like MASHUQA (1953), ANURAG (1956). He had appeared as a ?tangewala' in Raj Kapoor's AAH (1953) singing the song 'Choti Si Zindagani'. Mukesh is still known to his ardent fans as the 'voice' of Raj Kapoor and was an indispensable for the Raj Kapoor camp back then. Raj Kapoor's another favorite was lyricist Shailendra. Shailendra produced his maiden film TEESRI KASAM (1966) that had Raj Kapoor and Waheeda Rehman in the lead roles. But the film crashed at the box-office and unable to pay off the debts Shailendra committed suicide.

Talat MehmoodThe late Talat Mehmood was probably one of the biggest names in Ghazal singing in India. He was an immensely talented playback singer and was gifted with a silken voice that popularized Ghazal singing in Bollywood. Talat also acted in a few movies namely MALIK (1958), RAFTAR (1955) and WARIS (1954). Another bright star on the horizon of Indian film music was Salil Chaudhary! He was a highly endowed music composer whose scintillating musical finesse in MADHUMATI, ANAND, KABULIWALLAH and MERE APNE is still remembered by Hindi film lovers. But one actuality about Salil was that he had written the story of the then successful Bengali film RICKSHAWALLAH and also composed its music. The film was later adapted in Hindi as DO BEEGHA ZAMEEN. DO BEEGAH ZAMEEN was directed by Bimal Roy and is honored as an all-time classic in the history of Hindi cinema.

To this list of elitists will be added another designation now that of Shravan Kumar Rathod. After a sparkling career as music director, Shravan is now taking a plunge into filmmaking. And the man at the helms will be none other than Basu Chatterjee whose films like RAJNIGANDHA, CHHOTI SI BAAT and KHATTA MEETHA continue to be loved and adored the movie buffs till date. With his fondness for social comedy, we can hope that this film will too have something 'khatta-meetha' to it!
