Bollywood Box Office Report Of The Week: 4th October 2018

This Friday sees films belonging to three very different genre, trying their luck at the box-office; Sriram Raghvan’s crime suspense thriller, ANDHADHUN , SKF’s LOVEYATRI and supernatural horror film, LUPT. While front runner is likely to be the Ayushmann- Radhika starrer, Ayush-Warina’s LOVEYATRI can also make a mark in the Gujarat-Maharashtra belt, while the fate of LUPT will depend upon the content.

 

Last week witnessed the release of Yash Raj Films’ Varun-Anushka starrer SUI DHAGA- MADE IN INDIA and , Vishal Bhardwaj Picture Pvt. Ltd.’s PATAAKHA. As expected it was SUI DHAGA- MADE IN INDIA, which, after a decent start saw an escalation in collections, netting 55 crore till Tuesday, and given the very reasonable 30 crore budget (plus handsome non-theatrical recovery), the film is on way to a clean hit status. SUI DHAGA- MADE IN INDIA has also impressed in the overseas grossing $1.8m with £95,000 from UK and $585,000 from the US, during the opening weekend (28-30 September).

The other release of the same week as SUI DHAGA, Vishal Bhardwaj Picture Pvt. Ltd.’s PATAAKHA could put up a so-so performance netting 7 crore till Tuesday. One must add that both the films got advantage of the mid-week National Holiday.

Netting 32 crore during the opening week from India, BATTI GUL METER CHALU may just about break even, given that nearly 60 percent investment has already been recovered from non-theatrical rights.

 

The other major release, Nandita Das directed Nawazuddin starrer, MANTO, saw great critical acclaim but a very selective patronage netting just around 2.50 crore during the opening week.

 

 

Checking out Anurag Kashyap’s Abhishek, Vicky and Taapsee starrer MANMARZIYAAN, the film fell heavily during the second week as it collected 1 crore from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unrecieved), 10 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.25 lakhs from Surat, 3.50 lakhs from Baroda, 30 lakhs from Pune, 1.50 lakhs from Nasik, 2.25 lakhs from Goa, 65 lakhs from Delhi city, 20 lakhs from Noida, 10 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3.75 lakhs from Kanpur, 8.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Agra, 1.50 lakhs from Allahabad, 3.25 lakhs from Dehradun, 21.75 lakhs from Gurgaon, 4 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.75 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1.50 lakhs from Jalandhar, 1.25 lakhs from Amritsar, 1.50 lakhs from Ludhiana, 25 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.25 lakhs from Siliguri, 2 lakhs from Patna, 1.50 lakhs from Ranchi, 1.75 lakhs from Bhubaneshwar, 3.25 lakhs from Nagpur, 3 lakhs from Raipur, 5.50 lakhs from Indore, 5.75 lakhs from Gwalior, 15 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 2 cinemas unrecieved), 10 lakhs from Jaipur , 1.50 lakhs from Jodhpur, 1 lakh from Kota, 1.50 lakhs from Udaipur, 5 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1.25 lakhs from Aurangabad, 20 lakhs from Bangalore and 1.50 lakhs from Kochi. With another 6 crore, MANMARZIYAAN has netted 28 crore in two weeks from Indi and will struggle for recovery. The film has done reasonably in the overseas grossing £100,000 from UK and $560,000 from the US, till the second weekend (28-30 September).

Adding another 10 crore, the blockbuster STREE has netted 122 crore in three weeks from India and will again feature next week, in this column! STREE is on an inspired run in the overseas, in particular US, grossing nearly $825,000.
