Comedy as a way of life

Entertaining audiences has never been an easy task. To make them laugh and Encaptivate them simultaneously is not every man's cup of tea. But there have been stalwarts who nevertheless have continued to do so without ever stopping. It is very clich?d to say it but" the show must go on". And in every era, there have been people who have contributed to our laughter. From black & white to coloured television, they have dominated our screens.

To write about the legendary Kishore Kumar, in a few words would be to say very little. Movies like half-ticket, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Padosan will continue to entertain generation after generation. He made us laugh, he made us sing, he made us dance to his tune and he continues to do so. And the tradition has never stopped. Being the first comedian in Hindi cinema, Johnny Walker is a name to reckon with. His presence is missed greatly, but he has largely contributed to Hindi cinema. From cameo roles to dominating scenes in several films, Johnny the 'joker' has made us laugh when we want to cry. There have been several who have come, but never gone. From Jagdeep (Javed and Naved Jaffrey's father), Mehmood, Paintal, Asrani, Om Prakash, to Anupam Kher, Shakti Kapoor, Shekhar Suman, Johnny Lever, Govinda, the film industry does not have a dearth of talent.

Why do some actors /directors prefer comedy to serious acting? In the words of director Priyadarshan" Comedy is very challenging because it is very difficult...". Following him closely is artist cum director M.F Hussain. After Gaja Gamini, and yet to be released " Meenakshi ( a tale of 3 cities)", M.F.Hussain plans to direct a comedy film with Urmila Matondkar in the lead. In an excerpt from an interview Hussain says that "There is humour everywhere in our country, in the bylanes, in the kitchen and my film would attempt to capture this aspect". Without comedians, films would not have been the same. With no comic relief, a 3-hour film would become monotonous. But we appreciate and acknowledge the efforts of comedians, who are critically attacked for their acting.

They face criticism for poor performances, for making a mock show out of their own acting and various other things. But they have stood up to the challenge nevertheless. And their efforts have been applauded, but for the very first time, special awards have been introduced for comedians for their laudable performances. Marshall's is introducing "Marshall's comedian awards" where several categories have been slated under the genre of comedy. The jury will comprise of eminent personalities from distinguished fields. And the promoters of laughter shall be rewarded.
