Before Thugs, a rundown at Bollywood's memorable Diwali
Before THUGS OFHINDOSTAN makes history at the box office lets have a recap of recent Bollywood Diwali's that has been occupied by Ajay Devgn, Shahrukh Khan and more...
2018 – THUGS OF HINDOSTAN
Nothing can be better than this. Two titans in one film - Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan sharing screen space together. Perhaps the biggest casting coup of recent times after Subhash Ghai’s SAUDAGAR, that saw the thespian Dilip Kumar and the great Raj Kumar pitted against each other. Perhaps the biggest explosion of the Diwali season for Bollywood on paper at least, THUGS OF HINDOSTAN is the grand fireworks everyone is waiting to explode like never before.
2017 – GOLMAAL AGAIN AND SECRET SUPERSTAR
Last year’s Diwali season witnessed the release of two highly awaited films, Aamir Khan’s SECRET SUPERSTAR and Rohit Shetty’s GOLMAAL AGAIN. SECRET SUPERSTAR dealt with the aspirations of a young girl wanting to become a singer and GOLMAAL AGAIN was a hard-hitting comedy movie to watch over a festive season. The year established the supremacy of Rohit and Ajay during the Diwali season as GOLMAAL AGAIN made a thumping march towards victory surpassing Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan’s SECRET SUPERSTAR by miles at the box office.
2016 – AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL AND SHIVAAY
It was a major clash that saw the master of clashes and the undefeated Diwali champion Ajay Devgn against Karan Johar. AE DIL HAI MUSHKIL clashed with SHIVAAY. While ADHM was a romantic film, SHIVAAY was an action drama mounted on a huge scale. ADHM had its share of controversies, as it all started with India’s decision to cut ties with Pakistan and subsequently their artists. Both the movies managed decent patronage from its audience.
2013 – KRRISH 3
The third installment of the KOI MIL GAYA franchise starred Hrithik Roshan in dual roles along with Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Vivek Oberoi. With high-end VFX and extraordinary effects, the film did grab eyeballs of the mass audience.
2012 – SON OF SARDAR AND JAB TAK HAI JAAN
Yash Chopra’s last directorial JAB TAK HAI JAAN starred Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. Apart from the storyline, the film was also applauded for its music. Before Yash Chopra could shoot the last song sequence, the legendary director passed away so the makers decided to dedicate the movie to late Yash Chopra, which made audience emotional by the end of the film. However, the year saw an ugly spat between the makers of JAB TAK HAI JAAN and SON OF SARDAR which questioned the ethics of business. Things took a legal turn but the silver lining is that both the movies found its audience.
2011 – RA.ONE
Film RA.ONE presented us SRK in a never seen before avatar as a superhero in this sci-fi film. Shah Rukh Khan was back to his Diwali releases after a gap of 4 years. It was massively hyped and one of the costliest films of all time. It attracted a huge number of audiences of all age groups. As it was a solo Diwali release the film had a great opening at a weekend. The movie didn’t get the expected audience but the star power of Shah Rukh managed RA.ONE to make around 150 crores at the box office.
2010 – ACTION REPLAY AND GOLMAAL 3
2010 witnessed yet another major clash. Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn the two biggies of Bollywood locked horns together at the box office. The clash was between 2 genres - a comedy by Rohit Shetty and a time-bound drama by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. That year proved that Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgn are kings of Diwali releases. GOLMAAL 3 was one of the biggest blockbusters of 2010. Unfortunately, Akshay and Aishwarya couldn't spread their magic as their experiment of bringing a time travel film was a huge disappointment.
2008 – GOLMAAL RETURNS AND FASHION
2008 again had two films clashing during the Diwali Day and for the first time in a very long time, both films did well at the box office. Acclaimed Director Madhur Bhandarkar released his film FASHION starring Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut. The film won huge appreciation and went on to win National Award. While GOLMAAL RETURNS was an out and out entertainer. FASHION dealt with the real-life problems of the fashion industry.
2007 – OM SHANTI OM AND SAAWARIYA
OM SHANTI OM starring Shah Rukh Khan and debutant Deepika Padukone was a blockbuster in spite of its box-office clash with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s SAAWARIYA. That year Bollywood introduced us to the biggest heartthrobs of the Hindi film industry, Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. It was interesting to see that three of the most talented stars of Bollywood made their debut in Bollywood on the same day. OM SHANTI OM broke all box office records and emerged as the top grosser of that year.
