In the recent years, the months of January and February have mostly seen a very ordinary run for the Hindi film industry, and it is usually the carry over movies of the Christmas week (of the previous year) that saves the day. Yes, Republic Day week does manage its fair share of success, but the business is by and large dull.
However, the scenario has changed for the better in the 2017, as the year started on a successful note via Hrithik Roshan’s KAABIL and Shah Rukh Khan’s RAEES. Agreed that both were expected to be much bigger than they actually turned out to be, but then a clash does that and both the films had to pay for it, losing around 20-25 crore each.
Having said that KAABIL will eventually end at around 98 crores (including dubbed) from India while RAEES will run out of steam at 135 crore.
Not only that, KAABIL has grossed over $4m while RAEES managed $13.50m, from the overseas.
But the biggest cheer was reserved for Akshay Kumar, whose JOLLY LLB 2 went on to be the first clean hit of 2017 and has netted close to 108 crore from India and still counting. The film has also grossed over $5.30m from the overseas.
With the Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan starrer, BADRINATH KI DULHANIA, more or less certain to write another success story, it has turned out to be a good start for the Hindi film industry, the RANGOON disappointment notwithstanding!
