He was speaking on the occasion of the launch of the music album SURMAYI RAAT. The new Gulzar-Bhupinder Singh album was unveiled at a suburban Mumabi hotel. Mitali Singh, the well-known singer and wife of Bhupinder Singh was also present.


The well-known poet, filmmaker, and lyric writer refused to take questions about Bollywood music. He spoke about his long association with Bhupinder and Mitali Singh and praised them in glowing terms. He said that if he could he would put Bhupinder Singh voice in an amulet and wear it. When a young female reporter asked him that generally poets referred to a woman's eyes as 'surmayi eyes' and why was the album titled SURMAYI RAAT. This brightened up the 78 years old lyric writer's visage and he said that the album is also about women who have been his lifelong muse. ''Main aap logon ke liye hi to likhta raha hoon aur likhta rahoonga.'' He also added that he always felt as young as the times he lived in and never looked to the past and preferred to exist in the present.

SURMAYI RAAT has eight nazms and ghazals about the romantic moments of an early night (or late evening) that is neither too dark nor too light as described by Gulzar himself. It is composed and sung by Bhupindar Singh and all the nazms and ghazals are penned by Gulzar. The concept of the album came from Mitali Singh. The album is presented by Videocon D2H and marketed by Sa Re Ga Ma music.
