The post Eid-ul-Azha Friday saw the release of Jimmy Sheirgill, Sonakhshi Sinha, Ali Fazal and Diana Penty ’s HAPPY PHIRR BHAG JAYEGI along with Anil ‘Gadar’ Sharma directed Utkarsh, Nawaz starrer, GENIUS. While expectedly neither of the two could really set the box-office on fire, it was HAPPY PHIRR BHAG JAYEGI which was the front runner with a 10 percent start and a slight uptick during the latter shows. The other release GENIUS was much below and in single digit. Between the two it is HPBJ which can harbour some chances of success as the audience again preferred the Independence Day releases!

Meanwhile, John Abraham’s SATYAMEVA JAYATE has surprised all and sundry (but not us!) with an inspired run netting 75 crore during the extended 9-day week, capitalising on an unexpectedly good opening day (20 crore), and is on way to not only John’s biggest solo as well as a clean hit status!

The other release of the same week as SATYAMEVA JAYATE, Akshay Kumar’s GOLD, which was expected to walk all over the John Abraham venture(as per most of the trade sources), could not quite capitalise on a stupendous opening day (25 crore) and netted a decent 89 crore during the extended opening week. GOLD is much more expensive than SATYAMEVA JAYATE and in fact the last day of the opening 9-day week (Thursday) saw the Excel Entertainment film collecting less than the T-Series venture for the first time and so GOLD has to work that much harder for a clean hit tag!
