Here is the story behind how Nawazuddin Siddiqui bagged the role of Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray for the biopic THACKERAY.
As the world is busy in showering praises for Nawazuddin Siddiqui for bringing Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray alive on screen with THACKERAY - the Sanjay Raut’s biopic in Hindi and Marathi helmed by Abhijit Panse starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in titular role along with Amrita Rao as Meena Tai.
The trailer which was launched yesterday in Mumbai in both the languages at Carnival Imax with all fan fare, saw a very interesting revelation on how the King of Bollywood biopics Nawazuddin Siddiqui (MANTO, RAMAN RAGHAV 2.0, MANJHI: THE MOUNTAIN MAN) bagged the most challenging role of his career playing Balasaheb Thackeray – one of India’s most charismatic, fearless and outspoken leader.
Senior Shiv Sena politician and the force behind the biopic THACKERAY, Sanjay Raut said that he has always liked Nawazuddin Siddiqui's work and the casting of Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Balasaheb Thackeray was ‘freak’ ingly instant. This is how it happened, “ Once I was watching one of his films FREAKY ALI where he played the role of a golf player When I looked at his face, I thought he could be a choice, but I had to understand if he had the body-language to pull the role. I called him for a meeting at a hotel. I observed his walk and body language…that moment I decided that he would play the character," revealed Sanjay Raut at the event, much to the amazement to all present.
Certainly, playing a character like the founder of Shiv Sena Balasaheb Thackeray is one of the toughest task for any actor because the persona of Balasaheb is more than just larger than life, Balasaheb was not just a great leader who had an instant connection with his masses, Balasaheb Thackeray was one of the greatest orators, he was a gifted artiste – a cartoonist and that trailer brilliantly captures that aspect of Balasaheb Thackeray.
Director Abhijit Panse says that the biggest challenge was to cut the huge persona of Balasaheb into a common man for the biopic and show his struggle which was the toughest challenge.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui who has mastered the art of playing biopics on screen said, “The ease at which Balasaheb Thackeraygot connected with the people was amazing and the most difficult part”. The actor who was on cloud nine when he bagged the role of the biopic has worked tremendously hard on the mannerisms and noted diction coach Ashish Pathode has trained Nawazuddin in getting his Marathi dialect right.
People are already awed by the Hindi trailer, but in my opinion the Marathi one packs more punch. Nawazuddin Siddiqui has undoubtedly got that famous roar of Balasaheb Thackeray back on screen in a two plus hour film.
