How Rajesh Khanna gave a new lease of life to a song from ANAND?
Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli Haye
Kabhi Toh Hasaye, Kabhi Yeh Rulaye………
This melodious song from Rajesh Khanna’s superhit film ANAND is truly soul-stirring and a work of a genius.
Wanna know who has penned this song? Well the song is written by lyricist Yogesh, who tragically remains unsung despite giving chartbusting songs like ‘Rimjhim Gire Sawan’… (MANZIL), ‘Kai Baar Yun Bhi Dekha Hai…’ (RAJNIGANDHA), ‘Badi Sooni Sooni Hai Zindagi Yeh Zindagi…’ (MILI), ‘Jaaneman Jaaneman Tere Do Nayan…’ (CHHOTI SI BAAT) etc.
Prior to ANAND, Yogesh was a struggler and the fact is even the song ‘Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli Haye…’ was actually assigned to Gulzar, who was filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s favourite and was also writing the film’s screenplay. But since Gulzar had to go abroad for an important task, Hrishikesh Mukherjee gave an opportunity to Yogesh to pen a song in Gulzar’s absence.
Grabbing the golden opportunity with both hands Yogesh wrote a heart rendering philosophical song which overwhelmed Hrishikesh Mukherjee so much that he immediately got the song recorded in Manna Dey’s voice.
However, after editing the film Hrishikesh Mukherjee was in a fix! He could not find a suitable location in the film’s narrative to accommodate the song. But since the song was brilliantly written hence Hrishikesh Mukherjee decided to use the song in the background with the film’s introductory titles.
When Rajesh Khanna saw the rushes of the edited version he was left spellbound by the song but felt the song lost its significance in background. Hence, he suggested Hrishikesh Mukherjee to include the song in the film and the song was shot featuring Rajesh Khanna in it.
Yogesh in an interview revealed, “Thanks to Rajesh Khanna the song got a new lease of life and I became famous lyricist.”
