A short list of nine films in the 84th Academy Awards foreign language category does not include India's official entry the Malayalam film ABU, SON OF ADAM (ADAMANTE MAKAN ABU) by Salim Ahmed. Among the short-listed films are Iranian film A SEPARATION by Asghar Farhadi, which has already won the foreign language Golden Globe announced recently. The list surprisingly includes Germany's PINA by Wim Wenders, an artistic 3D documentary on the famous German choreographer, dancer, and a modern dance teacher Pina Bausch. The film also finds a mention in the documentary category of the 2012 Academy Awards. The other films in the features short list are: -

MONSIEUR LAZHAR by Philippe Falardeau, Canada
OMAR KILLED ME by Roschdy Zem, Morocco
WARRIORS OF THE RAINBOW: SEEDIQ BALE by Wei Te-sheng, Taiwan
FOOTNOTE by Joseph Cedar, Israel
IN DARKNESS by Agnieszka Holland, Poland
BULLHEAD by Michael R. Roskam, Belgium,
SUPERCLASICO by Ole Christian Madsen, Denmark,

These films have been selected out of the 63 submissions from across the world. The selection seems to be eclectic and with no indication of a trend. The final five films will be announced on 24th January 2012 by the nominations committee. The list has interesting omissions like Finland's LE HAVRE by Aki Kaurismaki, Lebanon's WHERE DO WE GO NOW? by Nadine Labaki, Hungary's THE TURIN HORSE by Bela Tarr, and Turkey's ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA by Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
