Interview : Niyati Shah
An exclusive interview with Niyati Shah, the CEO of the White Clouds production house on her most awaited film, MUMBAI CUTTING.
What is the concept of MUMBAI CUTTING all about?
MUMBAI CUTTING is an amalgamation of eleven short films put together as one film. What ties all the film up is the theme of the film which is Mumbai and therefore we call the film MUMBAI CUTTING. The film unfolds various facets of the metro life that is known for absorbing newer cultures and merging them into its own.
How did the idea arrive of making 11 short stories into one film?
The moment I thought of this concept of short films, I started approaching directors and everybody just loved the concept of making short films but eventually what happened was we got all the best film makers from Bollywood then we got greedy and decided to make a feature film.
On what basis did you select the directors?
whichever director we approached was completely game to work with us, but I must mention that the first person we spoke to was Sudhir Mishra and then it just went on and on to Rahul Dholakia, Revati, Rituparno Ghosh, Kundan Shah, Anurag Kashyap, Shashanka Ghosh, Ruchi Narain, Jahanu Barua, Manish Jha, Ayush Raina.
Tell us something about the cast of the film?
There is Soha Ali Khan, Jimmy Shergil, Sonali Kulkarni, Ranvir Sheorey, Vinay Pathak, Sushant Singh, Tara Sharma, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Raima Sen, Palash Sen, Shruti Seth, Rahul Dev, Deepak Dobriyal, Dipannita Sharma, Kavita Kaushik, Samrin, Sanjay Narvekar, Mahek Chel. There is no big starcast in the film because for a film like this the USP of the film is not the stars but the directors.
MUMBAI CUTTING is like your baby but which story is closer to your heart?
I have three stories very close to my heart. I like Revathy's film, then Anuraag Kashap and I think Rahul Dholakia's is outstanding. But every film has something different which I like about for e.g. I am completely in love with the subject which Revathy has selected which is human trafficking happening in Mumbai. The way she has treated the entire ten minutes concept and Sonali Kulkarni is completely outstanding in the film. The look of the film is fantastic.
What about the music in the film?
We have got very different kind of music directors in the film. The music lends diverse flavours from Euphoria, Indian Ocean, Ali Azmat, Fuzon, Sanjeev Shrivastav, Jeet Ganguly, Amartya and Papon, with vocals by Shreya Goshal, Shafquat Amanat Ali Khan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Nachiketa, Papon and Ali Azmat.
Tell us something about your production house, White Clouds?
White Clouds are set to make interesting cinema and we have got some very interesting line ups after MUMBAI CUTTING. We want to make path-breaking cinema. We want to take Indian films to international level which we have been able to do through MUMBAI CUTTING.
