His grandfather, Ashiq Hussain, was originally from Rajasthan and was the student of Pandit Gopalji of the Benaras Gharana in Kathak.
Ashiq Hussain made his debut as an action hero in Hindi films in the late 1930's and he was awarded the title of Samrat in the 1940's in the field of Kathak in India. He migrated to Pakistan post partition and went on to be Pakistan's most respected performer, choreographer and artist.
