Sanjay Gurbaxani: There is no actor without theatre

Sanjay Gurbaxani

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi, and Arun Jaitley have been the three political leaders of the different generation. Apart from being politicians, there is another similarity between them and that is actor Sanjay Gurbaxani.  Gurbaxani has played the role of these politicians on the screen perfectly. After acting in films like 'Madras Cafe', 'ABCD', 'Gabbar is Back', 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', 'Raees' and 'Raazi' and recently released web series ‘Criminal Justice’, Gurbaxani will be seen on the stage once again in Inayatullah Kantroo’s ‘DoRaha’.

A well-known face of TVCs, daily serials, films and web series, Gurubxani’s attraction for stage is intact. He says, “There is no actor without theatre. The theatre is the foundation for any actor and with each performance, it makes you better.” About the increasing number of streaming platforms, he feels, “Of course the choices are more but that doesn’t make an actor’s job easy.  Each medium demands different kind of acting and an actor will have to add more layers to his performance. It is exciting and challenging at the same time.”

Gurbaxani has turned into a politician often. About this, he says, “maybe my demeanor suits the demand of these roles and are tackled well so they roles come to me. I have enjoyed all the characters I have played till now but as I have played Pandit Nehru more than once and as I played him I got to know more about his challenges, his equation with party workers and his relation with Bapu. Knowing the history in depth to develop the character’s perspective also attracts me.”

‘DoRaha’ revolves around an army family. Gurbaxani plays a father who is answerable to others and himself as well. Though armed forces and politics are separate from each other they are still connected. He says, “I am glad that I have played intriguing characters till now. If I put these political roles and my character in the play parallel I would say a politician and a father both have their unique struggles. ‘DoRaha’ is a play that puts the internal struggle on stage in a way which everyone will find relatable. Along with Sanjay Gurbaxani, the cast includes of Mikhael Kantroo, Varun Tewari, Vijay Vikram Singh, Navyata Malkani, Sankalp Joshi, Prakhar Toshniwal and Varnika Singh.  The story of DoRaha revolves around the Randhawas, an army family whose lives are turned upside down after an unforeseen incident.
