Here is our review of CREED 2 – a reboot to CREED (2015) and the eighth installment in the ROCKY film series; does the Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Dolph Lundgren, Florian Munteanu, starrer by director Steven Caple, Jr. worthy of the great ROCKY legacy?, find out in our review of CREED 2.
What is CREED 2 exactly - sequel/spin-off/reboot?
Can be said all in one, but primarily a follow-up to the 2015 CREED
Adonis Creed (Michael B Jordan) the world heavyweight champion is married to Bianca (Tessa Thompson) and having a life. A deadly vengeance in the name of Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) is getting nurtured by Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). Ivan Drago – the man who had killed Adonis' father Apollo Creed in the ring in Rocky IV and then had lost to Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) in Russia. Ivan wants to reclaim his lost glory and massage his wounds with the defeat of Balboa’s disciple Adnois with his human monster Viktor. How the champion but a family man Adonis Creed takes up the deadly challenge of the mean and dangerous Viktor in spite of warnings by his mentor Balboa, finds the crux of this solidly winning, power packed and heartfelt sports drama that comes with some nostalgia that will stay forever.
Since 1976, the characters created by Sylvester Stallone for ROCKY series has remained an iconic inspiration for mainstream sports action flicks all over. In the eight installment of ROCKY series/franchise, Juel Taylor and Stallone pen a predictable screenplay on a formulaic story by Sascha Penn and Cheo Hodari Coker, but the writers attain the magic of making the adapted formula breathe with the emotions of fatherhood, self discovery and a rare insight on what happens to a ‘villian’ when he loses his pride.
The newcomer to the ROCKY series, Steven J. Caple Jr. (known for THE LAND) gives justification to the elements of CREED and ROCKY. The director handles the challenge of not spoiling the nostalgia, maintaining a tempo with great action and staying true to the soul of story – family connections, fatherhood and he achieves triumph. Though at sometimes he restores to crowd pleasing manipulations as ordered by the genre but still makes CREED 2 a respectable stand alone sequel.
Michael B Jordan
CREED 2 cements the quality of Michael B Jordan as a solid actor and a star. A performance that delivers all the right nuances of hardness and tenderness, Jordan pays tribute to the bravado of ROCKY we have seen since ages and this African-American ROCKY as Adonis Creed has that rare uppercut.
Since 1976, this man has mesmerized us as Rocky Balboa and after 42 years in 2018, he still does the same at the age of 72. Incredible!!. When he says Now you know what you’re fighting for, and Yo Adrian!, the ardent fan in you just want to stand up whistle and clap.
Dolph Lundgren packs a solid paunch as a man nurturing his hate since decades. Florian Munteanu as the deadly weapon created to avenge the humiliation and lost pride of his father is terrific.
Most precious/unforgettable moment
As you come across the nostalgia of ROCKY while watching CREED 2, and when the movie ends, you realize that this is the final appearance of the great Rocky Balboa on screen. The audience and especially the fans are astonished by the fact that Sylvester Stallone has given Rocky Balboa - one of the most memorable characters in Hollywood who was ready to fight for his right against all odds. CREED 2 will remain in memory of ROCKY and Stallone fans for ages.
