Jab Harry Met Sejal Movie Review
SRK banner Red Chillies Entertainments' JAB HARRY MET SEJAL is certainly one of the most anticipated films of the second half of the year. And expectations are gargantuan from the ever reliable numero-uno, composer-lyricist duo, Pritam and Irshad, to deliver some memorable scores, especially as the director concerned is Imtiaz Ali, whose films have always contained music par excellence! JAB WE MET, LOVE AAJ KAL, ROCKSTAR, HIGHWAY etc!
JAB HARRY MET SEJAL MOVIE STILLS
This is one 'Radha' song that will certainly rule the hearts and charts for quite a while. The extremely rhythmic and foot tapping, easy on the lips folk inspired tune makes this number a chartbuster. Shahid Mallya modulates his vocals well with full support from Sunidhi Chauhan, both rendering the number with ease and elan. Irshad's lyrics are icing on the cake, though at times the Punjabi lyrics are a bit difficult to comprehend, yet the tune and arrangements and SRK's charming presence overpowers all.
Pritam shows us why he was and still is the numero-uno composer (choice of top notch directors and producers) with 'Safar', a simply superb soft rock based number that introduces and characterises the male lead, Harry (SRK) who happens to be a guide in Europe. Irshad Kamil does a mindblasting job with words that are tailor made (for a tour guide)- 'Idhar ka hi hoon na, Na udher ka raha, Safar ka hi tha main, Safar ka raha'. Arijit seals this one with a 'straight from the heart' rendition with superb back up croonings and alaaps by Pritam. Excellent!
From one excellent number to another, 'Hawayein' is a lovely, melodious romantic interlude with a dew fresh tune and lively arrangements, and yet again Arijit aces this one with effortless ease and a rendition that charms. Irshad's lyrics are classy and very apt as the protagonists are on a journey, thrown in together, due to circumstances.
'Butterfly' is truly Imtiaz Ali trademark track, traditional Punjabi folk inspired, bhangra et al, lively , playful, chhed-chaad number rendered with zest and enthu by Aman Trikha, Dev Negi and Sundhi Chauhan with the Nooran sisters doing a superb back up support job.
The party number, 'Beech Beech Mein' makes one want to put on the dancing shoes such is the rhythmic, foot tapping tune and superb arrangements that are tailor orchestrated to dancing. In fact it takes one back to 'It's the Time to Disco' days of SRK! Arijit once again holds fort with great support from Shalmali Kholgade and Shefali Alvares.
To conclude, it's been quite a lacklustre year so far with not just films performing below expectations but even the musical scores of highly anticipated films like KAABIL, TUBELIGHT and even SRK's very own RAEES etc, not really making their presence felt. Therefore, Imtiaz-Pritam-Irshad's JAB HARRY MET SEJAL appears to be a 'mannah' from the heaven, a complete album in itself, entertaining, classy-cum-massy with some memorable songs like 'Radha', 'Safar', 'Hawayein' and 'Beech Beech Mein' which happen to be our favourite(s). The music should certainly help the cause of the love story, which releases all over this Friday.

Galloping on the same TAMASHA of journey, self discovery, jaw-dropping locales, Imtiaz Ali's JAB HARRY MET SEJAL starring Bollywood 'King of Romance' - Shah Rukh Khan and the infectiously charming Anushka Sharma is a nice, long, love letter to your valentine, filled with roses, wine, picturesque postcards but sadly the feeling of love, romance is missing.
JAB HARRY MET SEJAL MOVIE STILLS
A proven hand in churning Bollywood romance, Imitaz this time had a dream pair to helm his best take on relationship but ends up delivering a bad, plagiarized mash up of his previous scripts that fails to 'ring' the bell.
Sejal (Anushka) while boarding back after her Europe tour with her family and fiance realizes that her engagement ring is missing. Sejal hires the tour guide Harry (Shah Rukh) who took them along Europe to fetch her ring and what happens in between is everybody's guess.
This self indulgence comes with a shocker in the character of Sejal (Anushka Sharma) which initially shows traits of a good girl from a good family in her innocence and curiosity starts exploring the dark side of life (SOCHA NA THA, ROCKSTAR) but her strange and sudden flirting with Harry by asking him whether she is that 'layak' (means physically attractive enough) like those firangs who Harry dates with is unconvincing.
More shocking is to find such shallowness from Imtiaz who designed the fabulously unforgettable Geet played by Kareena Kapoor in JAB WE MET. Here we are forced to ask WHY SHE MET. And why Sejal has to be a Guajarati with that flawed accent? Because she is from Mumbai . got it.. na. forget it.
Shah Rukh Khan - the king of romance who for many can still romance a stone with his charm, has his share of moments in his rustic avatar as Harry, sporting a tattoo which is partially visible, SRK looks haggard but shines in moments like the morning when he wakes up to find Anushka lying beside him, when he shares his past and when he shouts her name. Romance has been SRK's kingdom and when he looks into woman's eyes its magic as ever. But sadly the required overall sweep is missing and this is his own domain...that's worrying.
Ghyasuddin Mohammed Qureshi (Gas) played by Chandan Roy Sanyal may have been included to give the movie a different tone for a while which was now boringly showing Harry and Sejal hopping around the jaw-dropping locales of Amsterdam, Budapest, Prague etc in Europe and doing bhangra/ garba at their will but without any beat in this lethargic hunt. This quirky attempt disastrously fails.
Imtiaz Ali's beaten down to death TAMASHA this time is constantly gasping for help but it's far to be found. It's a pity that Imtiaz Ali in JAB HARRY MET SEJAL fails to make the chemistry between such attractive peoples like SRK and Anushka tickling, curdling to the viewers giving them a mushy feel. It doesn't work as the script, situations doesn't generate the romance. It's a boring date movie and on top of that it's not even an Imtiaz Ali film in the end even after possessing all its known traits.
Full marks to K.U. Mohanan's jaw-dropping cinematography and production values which is top rate.
Otherwise things are disappointingly lost in JAB HARRY MET SEJAL, the touted rom com turns out to be a bore com, romance goes surprisingly 'Phurr' along with director Imtiaz Ali in this flick.
I conclude by beginning with these words expressed by Anushka to SRK which goes like 'High Hopes ha' yeah we had high hopes but its lost like the 'ring'.. tring tring Dear Imtiaz one suggestion - please bring back JORDAN and GEET in your next Bollywood 'preet' ( read rom com), romance will be met.
