The very first KAANCHI teaser was a pointer to the fact that Subhash Ghai the showman is back! The song promos only cemented the belief that the director's impeccable record of musical chartbusters shall remain intact. The composers for this musical love saga are Ismail Darbar and Salim-Sulaiman, and they, along with Ghai's strong musical acumen (quite like Sanjay Bhansali), are expected to provide a memorable audio. So let's check if the high expectations are met with!

Ismail Darbar's 'Manmohini', which introduced Aishwarya's character in HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM still remains one of the finest and memorable song crafted in Bollywood history and its only befitting that the title track, 'Kaanchi Re Kaanchi' comes close to this legendary number. All credit to Sukhwinder for an awesome rendition, Irshad Kamil for creating a beautiful sketch of the lead through his words and last but not the least, the composer himself for choosing a dew fresh tune and sublime arrangements.

Ismail's winning form continues with the romantic ballad of the year, the extremely melodic, 'Tu Sab Kuch Re', a heavenly love song that simply blows one off the feet in just the first hearing and the more one listens to the awesome duet the more one falls in love with this intense composition. The prince of romantic number, Sonu Nigam and Anweshaa are absolutely mind-blowing with the composer providing support. The song has the stamp of Subhash Ghai enveloped in Ismail's musical sensibilities.

Subhash Ghai's musical sense is legendary and here in 'Main Mushtanda' he transcends boundaries and comes up with an excellent rap and hip hop number that is as rhythmic, contemporary and youth identifiable as any, say Yo Yo number. The signature tune is superb and catchy; lyrics (by the director himself) which are a mix of Haryanvi and Hindi provide a peak into the grey character of the male lead. Mika Singh is mind blasting, Aishwarya Majumdar provides good support with Earl Edgar's interesting rap. It's definitely a chartbusting effort by the master.

'Kaisa Hai Dard Mera' has strong reminiscence of Ismail's Darbar's style of music in HDDCS in parts, and one can decipher 'Tadap Tadap Ke' in this sad, separation number. Ankit Tiwari traverses the high notes with elan. The signature tune of the LOVE STORY finds place here after the title song as well and the use of soft rock and a hint of the love song 'Tu Sab Kuch Re' towards the end conjures up a good number.

She comes to Mumbai to seek revenge. She manages to knock off the powerful politician's family who has been ruling the city for 30 years.

Ghai comes a little late in the day with his banner to end corruption and to fight for the right and not to bow down to corrupt politicians. In fact he tries to tell too many things and confuses the little girl, Mishti.

Rishab Sinha is first rate and the only one to leave his imprint with his fantastic performance. For the rest, it was like a reunion party.

Contrary to Ghai's tag line which reads 'The Unbreakable', KAANCHI is brittle!

Had KAANCHI been released in the early 90s, it would surely have done well. But since that time, films in India have taken a leap forward, both with newer directors and talent coming onto the scene as well as it getting technically sound.

KAANCHI fails on both these counts; it is an outdated storyline and does not even boast of any technical finesse. In fact, for the first 20 minutes or so, you are treated to a screenplay along with characters that would best describe CID on Sony TV or Lapataganj, another serial.

Thirdly, Mishti, who makes her debut playing the title role, lacks conviction. She is plain in every scene. Even post interval, when she has to perform with steely resolve, she comes out playing this lost child with her sweet innocent charm. A complete miscast.

Never once does the level of performances rise above mediocre. Subhash Ghai ensures that. Also, his fixation of using lyrics from his older movies demonstrates that he is happy living in the past. Life goes on; we all have to move forward.
