Who would have thought there would be a time when Bollywood stars would be hosting TV shows and a TV show in all its glory would carve its path all the way to the big screen? Yes, the time has come now. With actors such as Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Akshay Kumar hosting TV shows, popular serial 'Khichdi' is a full fledged feature film now.

A film adaptation is not an easy task. If the earlier work was a success, it's not certain that its adaptation will follow suit. Also, it brings with expectations and comparisons aplenty.

So does KHICHDI- THE MOVIE live up to its expectations? You bet it does. It's a complete laugh riot.

Hansa's (Supriya Pathak) brother Himanshu (J.D.) dreams of having a legendary love story that'll go down in the history books. But there's a slight problem. He hasn't found any girl yet. Also, no one is ready to marry him. Then, his neighbour Parminder (Kirti Kulhari) falls for him, and their marriage is fixed. But how can such a simple love story, with no family objections, no issues between the couple, no sad songs become legendary? So, Himashu's family decides to complicate their love story so that it becomes renowned. Do they succeed eventually, is what ensues.

KHICHDI- THE MOVIE mainly works for its super characterisations. All the characters and their histrionics are similar to the serial. They are totally adorable. The story takes a ludicrous turn at the interval point, but that's not a big deal as the screenplay is laden with uproarious moments. The comedy is completely clean without any double-meaning dialogues.

All PJ fans, this movie is just for you. Most of the jokes are mainly derived by taking the literal meaning of phrases and words. Imagine, Parminder stretching a photo from both ends as use photo 'kheechne' bulaya hai. The gags are inane yet funny. Right from the Ishwar (God) sequence in the start to the court sequence in the climax, KHICHDI is a crazy, uproarious ride. All the neighbours of Himanshu are named Parminder so that it's easier to remember one name instead of 70 odd. What an idea, sirji!

Director Aatish Kapadia does a fabulous job of retaining the magic of Khichdi on the big screen. Although some portions do fail, the overall tempo is smooth and appealing. Sanjay Jadhav's cinematography is impressive. Raju Singh's music goes with the film's flow.

The film scores brownie points for the performances. All the performances are exaggerated, but that was required. Supriya Pathak is excellent. Anang Desai is decent in his part. Rajeev Mehta (Supriya's husband) is implausible. However, his acting style reminds one of Paresh Rawal. Nimisha Vakharia (as Jayshree) is remarkable. J.D. delivers an amazing performance. Kirti Kulhari makes an impressive debut. She looks uncannily similar to Urvashi Sharma. The cameos of Farah Khan, Satish Shah, Deven Bhojani and Paresh Ganatra are enjoyable.

The last reel of the film says, 'If you have liked the film, please SMS others. If not, see it again and them SMS'. I have complied. I hope you will too.

Zany, entertaining and spicy, this KHICHDI is delectable. Do eat it for a satiating experience.
