A notable improvement in Bollywood animated features which are rare. MOTU PATLU : KING OF KINGS directed by Suhas D Kadav and produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, Cosmos Entertainment and Maya Digital Studios is an amusing family entertainer that skillfully manages to win the hearts of kids at heart and while doing so brings smiles to the adults as well.

Based on the endearing 'Motu Patlu' - the famous desi Laurel Hardy from Lotpot comics which where a rage at some time and are still popular in the Hindi speaking belt of this country (the reason why the adventures of Motu Patlu are still aired on a popular kids channel and the making of this feature), the movie retains the characters seen in the tv series like Dr. Jhatka, Chingam, Ghaseta and smoothly mixes them with a lovable lion and the safari adventure that gives a short kick of the MADAGASCAR feel.

It all begins when a vegetarian carrot eating circus lion - Guddu Ghalib (voice by Vinay Shukla) bumps into Furfuri Nagar - the territory of Motu and Patlu (voiced by Sourav Chakraborty). Guddu is fed up by the daily circus routines of jumping through fire rings, cycling etc. etc.

Initially Guddu scares a hell out of Furfri Nagar people who think Guddu is the fearsome Lion but when he demands 'lassi' and relishes on carrot, Motu Patlu and their gang that includes Rajini obsessed cop - inspector Chingham, Dr. Jhatka, and Ghaseta (all voiced by Sourav Chakraborty), they decide to pack Guddu back to the jungles of National Park.

As they proceed, the story takes a filmy turn giving ode to bollywood blockbusters like DON, KALICHARAN, ROWDY RATHORE etc, a lookalike of Guddu - Simha (The lion King of the jungle) is challenged by a greedy poacher Narsimha and what happens next forms the crux of this animated feature.

Suhas D Kadav feature stays faithful to the genre throughout and that is 'MOTU PATLU'S' biggest achievement. It never tries to be too adventurous and sticks to its agenda to please the kids at heart.

Those who are constantly feasted on Hollywood animations may find the technicalities not as polished to that level but certainly its better and on the line of improvement. The 3D effects are fine.

The voice-overs are okay and the solitary song written by Gulzar and composed by Vishal Bhardwaj is fantastically filmed giving an impression that Indian studios can easily create the ''Madagascar'' type hysteria if done with will and passion.

Entertaining kid movies like MOTU PATLU : KING OF KINGS demand bigger exposure, personally I would have loved to see this animated feature releasing on big vacations like Diwali, Summer or Christmas, kids are and will remain the biggest market no star can beat them. Hopefully in future movies targeting kids will eye big holidays if we keep on churning 'Motu Patlu' like this from time to time.

All said and done, MOTU PATLU : KING OF KINGS may not be creatively at best but it's certainly a notch above the rest we have seen in Bollywood animation features, its Indian, its original and it's fun. Go for it and don't forget to take your kids along.
