Movie Review : MY BIRTHDAY SONG - Brave, novel, heady & luridly mesmerizing

A daring spook into the world of urban infidelity that is constantly haunted by guilt, fear and anxiety, actor Samir Soni’s debut as a director in MY BIRTHDAY SONG is brave, novel, heady and luridly mesmerizing.

MY BIRTHDAY SONG is a rare physiological thriller that breezes some indie air and is allured by an urge to keep the audience hooked.

Samir Soni and Vrushali Telang together pen an engaging script where a successful ad man Rajeev (Sanjay Suri) is haunted by nightmares and the 40 something urban has not slept for a year. On his birthday party, a chance encounter with a luscious Sandy (Nora Fatehi) leads to shocking and dazzling twists and turns that shakes the déjà vu world of Rajeev. Revealing more will be fatal.

Samir as a helmer displays his loyalty towards the psychological thriller genre, the hitchcokian, kafkaish cocktail is heady as the helmer weaves a haunting dream within dream sequence that echoes with the urban mindset and scenario observed in successful middle age individuals who are undergoing crises.

Sanjay Suri is effortless and gets into the skin of his character with ease, those dark circles under his eyes form an instant connect with the audience, the actor portrays the struggle, vulnerability and the push and pull between dreams and reality of Rajeev winningly.

The scenario may turn bizarre for those who visit theaters for entertainment and don,t wish to put any effort. The novelty of MY BIRTHDAY SONG is the key.

Further, the movie fails to give extra dimensions to Nora Fatehi and Zenia Starr who plays Rajiv's wife Ritu. The premise had the potential to add extra layers and lacks the overwhelming depth. The erotic scenes are poorly handled.

Technically polished and well crafted, MY BIRTHDAY SONG is a 96 minutes of dizzying, haunting and brave attempt by producer Sanjay Suri and Samir Soni. Helmed by debutant Samir Soni who scores extra points by piling the complex theme on disturbing aspects of betrayal and lust trapped in a snaky curly timeline moving back and forth.
