Rajinikanth in PETTA

Coming straight to the point and that’s what matters the most. Rajinikanth in PETTA is the Rajinikanth his fans where dying for since KABALI, KAALA and more.. PETTA is a true blue Rajinikanth entertainer, action, emotion, swag, style & attitude. Pongal in Rajiniland has already arrived.

What is the plot/storyline of PETTA?

A fearless and cool hostel warden Kaali ((Rajinikanth) starts setting things right in the area, tames the rowdies headed by Michael (Bobby Simha), shows them their place, charms the mother of a student played by Simran. Circumstances bring Kaali against Singhar Singh (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a politician and his son, Jithu (Vijay Sethupathi). It’s time to settle some pending scores.

Analysis

The story of PETTA is more of a celebration of the phenomenon called Rajinikanth. Karthik Subbaraj has written a love letter to his idol, an offering by a self confessed fan boy to his deity. This new age BAASHA, has traces of other Rajinikanth’s blockbusters like ANNAMALAI, ABOORVA RAGANGAL, the loyal fan base will be delighted to receive the kiss of nostalgia in a flash from MULLUM MALARUM ( the name Kaali). What will happen if today Mr. Bachchan appears in a character by the name Vijay in an action packed masala!!!.. it’s that kind of a feeling… and that’s not all, PETTA has traces of Shah Rukh Khan’s MAIN HOON NA as well. Somewhat similar to what Puri Jagannath did in his tribute to the iconic Amitabh Bachchan in BUDDAH... HOGA TERRA BAAP in 2011.

Rajinikanth’s performance in PETTA

Right from the very first “Rajini moment” that takes the loyal fans back to APOORVA RAAGANGAL. PETTA sees Rajinikanth back to his heroics and cool antiques. The cigarette toss makes a solid comeback, the humour, Superstar is in super form, at times when we have witnessed the fall of the Khans recently, Rajinikanth finds his old mass appealing charisma back. The walk gets swift, the dialogue delivery finds its old charm. And yes there’s a watch sales and service store by the name “Muthu” as well. Full nostalgia. This time thalaivar is in flesh and blood not enhanced and powered as robot. Time to get Rajinified with full might.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a gifted actor and here he is fine but we needed more layer in his characterization.

Karthik Subbaraj direction in PETTA

The talented Karthik Subbaraj (PIZZA, JIGARTHANDA, IRAIVI and last year MERCURY) fulfills his promise and makes the fans of Rajinikanth dance with joy. The first half is a celebration of Rajini’ and his stardom. The second half finds the filmmaker in Karthik Subbaraj breathing some air as the narration gains momentum  and comes as a whole. The climax is interesting and yes there is a surprise.

Flaws in PETTA

What happens when a self proclaim fan decides to make a crowd pleaser in order to please his own community and worship his idol on screen?. The fan in you takes over the filmmaker in you and you are okay with a functional screenplay that tries different things, ragging in college, sand smuggling, love angle. Other characters like Bobby Simha, including the main villain Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Simran etc search for depth. If that was not enough, the need to throw in a political message is surprising.

Technical analysis/making

Production values are top notch. Tirru’s cinematography gets better in the second half. The action scenes are smartly executed. The soundtrack by Anirudh Ravichander pumps up the impact.

Final verdict, Is PETTA worth watching?

Still asking?!. Get Rajinified at once I say!!! Thalaivar is on the move, the humble, immensely loved and one of the most hard working superstar – Rajinikanth’s full-throttle energy, swag and charm is in the mood to rule and reclaim his crown.
