It seems cop films are in vogue in Bollywood. If it was DABANGG last year, this year (we are just in May), it's DUM MAARO DUM and now SHAGIRD. The film is a comeback of Tigmanshu Dhulia, whose last film, CHARAS released way back in 2004.

After AB TAK CHHAPPAN (2004), Nana Patekar plays a cop yet again in SHAGIRD. He essays the role of an eccentric crime branch cop, Hanumant Singh. He is like the imdb of old Hindi songs and loathes the modern ones. He doesn't mind accepting bribes and sharing the money with his team. However, he has a tough time mentoring young officer Mohit (Mohit Ahlawat), who's the latest addition in his team.

Hanumant and local gangster Bunty Bhaiya (Anurag Kashyap) are chamchas of fraudulent politician Rajmani Singh (Zakir Hussain), who can do anything for power. The plot involves the dirty games played by these characters to satisfy their greedy souls.
Just like Hanumant Singh's character, the film tries too hard to be 'cool'. In spite of having copious twists and turns, it fails to hold your attention. A thriller needs to be tight, but the screenplay lags on many occasions. The perpetual killing spree of Hanumant Singh and his men, becomes too much to grasp.

On the other hand, there are some witty and comic dialogues which provide the intermittent relief. When Mohit says that he loves cricket, Hanumat retorts, 'Cricket to alu hai, sabhi khate hain.' The encounter sequences in the first half are nicely done.

Pravin Angre's editing is jerky. Yogesh Jani's cinematography shows a new side of Delhi.

Nana Patekar plays his part well, but we have seen him in similar roles in the past. Mohit Alhawat has a single expression in the entire film. Rimi Sen, who plays a journalist, doesn't get much scope. Anurag Kashyap lacks the menacing attitude of a gangster. Zakir Hussain acts well.

SHAGIRD fails in its attempt to be a taut thriller and overstays its welcome.
