THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB sees the hot Claire Foy replacing Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara the leads of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO – 2009 and 20011 respectively in Fede Álvarez’s film. Does the hot Claire Foy (BREATHE, THE CROWN) steps in those jet-black leathers and that tattoo with élan in this sequel to David Fincher's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO?. Is the second installment in the American-produced MILLENNIUM film series based on characters in the book series by Stieg Larsson worthy enough?. Find out in our review.
Opens with a sequence that is bang on, the young Lisbeth Salander (Claire Foy) is seen stringing up a sadistic women abuser in Stockholm. Without wasting much of our time, Salander receives a phone call from Frans Balder (Stephen Merchant), a terminated employee of the National Security Agency who wonders whether she will be the funky superhero as a female James Bond who will save America and the world?. Frans has developed a computer program called FireFall, which accesses the world’s nuclear weapon codes, but has developed a feeling that America doesn,t deserve such power and asks Salander to hack it/steal it from NSA’s databanks. The smart Salander is willing but security codes are a problem. This leads to a thrilling cat and mouse game to secure the codes that involves the Swedish police, the National Security Agency, an evil gang led by her estranged sister and her former partner, Mikael Blomkvist (Sverrir Gudnason).
Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Álvarez (previous - EVIL DEAD (2013), DON'T BREATHE - (2016), melts the fiery MILLENNIUM milieu to a show of all style less substance. What made Lisbeth Salander - the victim of multiple sexual assaults beginning from when she was a child, stand out in previous encounters like David Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (2011) was the remarkable ability of the makers to blend the psychological trauma of Lisbeth Salander with the graphic violence. Salander’s internal pain struck a chord but here it’s used just as a ploy for a stylish female bond flick that wishes to paddle her feminism softly, for a purpose, as an excuse. Not done.
Claire Foy impresses as the no mischief Salander but is below par with what Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara had achieved. The writing by Steven Knight, Fede Alvarez and Jay Basu is patchy for the general audience and an act of betrayal for Salander fans.
The makers should have made a hip ultra female 007 bond instead with all the cool motorcycle chases and sniper shoot-outs at its place which doesn,t really needed an emotional punch to steer our consciousness, we as an audience would have been happy with the adrenaline rush with continue doses of oomph.
In short THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB by Fede Álvarez’s is caught in the web to cash on THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, MILLENNIUM following without honoring Stieg Larsson and Lisbeth Salander's powerful legacies. It painfully reduces the crusader Salander into just a plain hacker, a female Jason Bourne with a nose ring wearing those jet-black leathers and that tattoo.
