Staying true to ‘Dr. Seuss’ spirit, the Benedict Cumberbatch voiced CG – animated tribute to the holiday classic kisses the target younger audience and gets a hug from the adults as well.

Much better than the 2000 Ron Howard-Jim Carrey collaboration, the Scott Mosier and Yarrow Cheney directed venture is the classic story of a grouch who hates Christmas celebrations. The town of Whoville celebrates Christmas with all fan fare and hope, The Grinch hatches a wicked plan to malign the festive season and in due course learns its true meaning.

Those who have aware of Dr Seuss holiday classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”, the plot has nothing new to offer but yes, the message of spreading love and kindness is aptly timed.

The third adaptation of Seuss story by Illumination Entertainment animation has soul as the feature version adds some touchy additions like Grinch interaction with his dog Max. A cute Cindy-Lou Who (Cameron Seely) in the town of Whoville, masterminding a plan to trap Santa on Christmas eve and ask his help in getting some relief for her overworked single mom (Rashida Jones). The additions strike the right emotional chord. A big size reindeer named Fred also nicely ‘fits’ in Michael LeSieur and Tommy Swerdlow’s involving and moving screenplay.

The visual effects and the VFX are as ordered (Whoville is an eye popping delight). Cumberbatch voice over is the key to Grinch’s overwhelming impact. Production values are rich and Danny Elfman’s delightful score pumps up the proceedings. Pharrell Williams adds the nostalgic touch by speaking in rhymes from the original book.

THE GRINCH is vibrantly sweet, witty and charmingly relevant. A pleasant outing with family.
