This week saw multiple releases in the form of Imtiaz Ali’s LAILA MAJNU, the Manoj Bajpayee starrer GALI GULEIYAN, J.P. ‘Border’ Dutta directed PALTAN as also Shiv Nadar Foundations’ HALKAA and Hollywood’s NUN.
While none of the Indian releases could make much of a mark with PALTAN and LAILA MAJNU putting up the best performance opening at around 8-10 percent, it was the Hollywood venture NUN, the next in the CONJURING series which dominated the show with a 35-40 percent start . While the usual norm is to say ‘there can be a change of fortune during the coming days of the weekend’, unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the case with the new Hindi releases of this week.
Meanwhile, Maddock Films and D2R Film Pvt Ltd’s Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor starrer STREE, put up a spirited (in the literal sense!) show, notching up an impressive 60 crore opening week with a good hold on the second Friday. And that ensures at least a super hit outcome for the 24 crore investment (budget plus P&A), all inclusive cost film.
Sadly, STREE’s release companion, the next in the YPD franchise, Sunny Sounds Pvt Ltd and Pen India Pvt Ltd’s YAMLA PAGLA DEEWAANA: PHIR SE , netted just around 11 crore during the opening week from India and faced total rejection from the paying audience. The only consolation is that the makers have already recovered 35 crore from non theatrical rights.
